Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards

Congratulations to Katie Shannon and Izzy Fitzgerald who have gained their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards. This is a tremendous achievement, especially as we are unsure when, if ever before, a Bedalian has received this award. Katie volunteered in local schools and a nursery for 12 months, participated in dance at school for six months for the Physical section of the award and had guitar lessons for 18 months for the Skills section, as well as going on a week’s painting course in Wales. Izzy, who left Bedales last summer and is currently volunteering in Borneo with Raleigh International, volunteered in a care home for 12 months, used sailing for her physical activity (18 months) with scuba diving for six months as her skill, and went on a residential sailing course in Argentina. The girls’ four day expedition section was completed on Exmoor last summer after a four day practice on Dartmoor in July 2011. View photos.
