Sixth Form reading mentors at partner school

The growing partnership between Bedales and Charter Academy, Portsmouth gained a new strand last term with the reading mentors programme. Each Wednesday afternoon six Bedales 6.1 students go to Portsmouth by train and spend an hour reading with six Year 7 students. Then they have tea together. In the first week Bedales students had a training session with a Charter reading specialist who helped them to understand the sorts of challenges their mentees face. Then recently Charter students came to Bedales for the first time – in the pouring rain – and spent their reading hour in the Library. After tea and doughnuts in the Pigeon Hole they definitely didn’t want to leave, and their teacher Trina Traharne says they keep asking when they can come back. While most sessions will be at Charter, so their students don’t miss lessons travelling, we’ll be hosting them at Bedales once every half term, with tea and, hopefully, sunshine. View photos.
