Senior Literary Society discusses Pale Fire

The Senior Literary Society met recently to discuss our latest read, Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov. The novel is made up of four sections: a foreword, a poem, a commentary on the poem and an index, all written and featuring apparently real but fictional characters. Within this fictional structure a strange and perhaps fantastical murder plot evolves. It brought about some interesting conversations and debates about postmodernism, metafiction and the question of what actually constitutes a novel, as well as an interesting comparison with Nabokov’s better-known novel, Lolita.
