Save the date for Bedales’ first Philosophy Festival

“Philosophy of…”

Saturday 13 September 2014

Wisdom begins in wonder (Socrates)

What is “Philosophy of…”?

“Philosophy of…” is for enquiring minds.

Pioneers with vastly different areas of expertise are given a platform to share their passions, from a philosophical slant. “Philosophy of…” will celebrate rarely explored schools of philosophy, through other disciplines, providing an enticing and exciting access into philosophy.

The Festival is a stimulating day filled with events on Saturday 13 September 2014 at Bedales School. With the support of the Headmaster Keith Budge, the Festival is being organised by a Bedales student group of sixth formers.

More about “Philosophy of…”

The Festival offers a truly ambitious range of philosophical critique on numerous topics for a broad audience.  It comprises multiple lectures and debates of roughly one hour in different parts of the school from 11am – 4pm. With “Philosophy of…” we can think about our favourite subjects in a way that we may never have done before.

We are currently honoured to be hearing these speakers in September:

  • Baroness Kishwer Falkner (Life Peer and Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs)
  • Jeremy Paxman (Journalist, Broadcaster and Author)
  • Beatrix Campbell OBE (Writer and Feminist)
  • Sinclair Beecham (Co-founder of Prêt à Manger)
  • John Caird (Director and Writer of plays, musicals and opera)
  • Dr. David Read (Chair of Education in Chemistry, RSC)
  • Emma Bridgewater (British ceramics manufacturer)
  • Rev. Will Hughes (Vicar of St. Peter’s, Petersfield)
  • Dr. Kamyar Afarinkia (Senior Lecturer in Medicine, Bradford University)
  • Philip Young (former Director of Studies and Music at Bedales)
  • Dr. Valerie Sinason (Poet, Writer and Psychoanalyst)
  • Dolores Iorizzo (University Lecturer)

A detailed programme will be developed in the coming months as further speakers are confirmed.

Crucial to the thinking behind “Philosophy of…” are variety, inclusiveness and opportunity. The Festival is therefore open to not only school pupils aged 11-18, their parents and teachers but also to members of the public with an interest in philosophical thought.

These events will take advantage of the beautiful surroundings at Bedales in late summer.  We have eight venues with seating ranging from 20 to 400, including indoor and outdoor theatres and catering will be provided.

Whatever your passion, experience the Philosophy relating to it.

Through “Philosophy of…” everyone can love wisdom.
