Block 5 student through to national public speaking final

Bedales Public Speaking Team (Harry Green as Chairman, Cameron Cross as Questioner and Flora Shaw as Speaker) recently took part in the South East England regional final of the Public Speaking Competition organised by the English Speaking Union (ESU). It was held at Dartmouth House in Mayfair, a superb 18th Century building now the ESU  Headquarters. Flora spoke on the topic “The school day is designed for adults and not for children”. She structured her speech beautifully and spoke with humour and conviction. She was very persuasive. Although the whole team did not win (only one went through to the national final), Flora won the best speaker award for the third time in succession. This means that she now goes forward to the national final of the competition for individual speakers, the Churchill Competition, to be held in London on 4 October. Congratulations Flora! This is a considerable accolade.
