Enquiries to the Archives have been flooding in this term, and not all to do with WW1. Bedalian connections should feature in a number of exhibitions and events locally in the next few months; Petersfield Museum will have a display on George Marston, who was the artist on Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition before becoming Art Master here. We have also been discussing with the museum how we can help with documents to add interest to their annual displays of the historic costumes donated by Bedales to the museum some years ago. 100 years ago, Bedalians were involved in the excavation of the Roman Villa at Stroud, and this was the subject of a guided tour on 9 March. Further afield, if you are visiting the Lakes, the Wordsworth Trust is planning an exhibition on life in Grasmere during WW1. Laura and Mary Badley, Mr Badley’s sisters, were very active and philanthropic members of the community there, providing affordable housing for the ex-servicemen and starting the local branch of the WI.
