Bedalians head to Oxford

Every year, 6.1 students at Bedales have the opportunity to attend the Oxford University Open Day. This gives them the chance to attend lectures, see some of the colleges, and get a feel for what an Oxford education, and the application process, would be like. This year, as part of the 3i programme, students in Block 3 and 4 were invited to hop on the bus for a trip that we ran in parallel: an Oxford experience that introduced them to a top university, and to find out the differences that Oxford and Cambridge present, compared with other universities. For the youngest students, it was a chance to iron out some misconceptions ‘If I’m at this college, am I still at Oxford?’ or ‘Which college does English?’ For some, it was a chance to start setting their sights high for study after Bedales.

Whilst the 6.1s were traipsing from college to college in the afternoon, Block 3 and 4 got a chance to see some of Oxford’s excellent museums, including the Museum of the History of Science, and the Natural History Museum (including the shrunken heads in the Pitt Rivers). The Block 3s had a photo competition, with categories such as ‘most intriguing object’ which you can see above.

This is just one of the many opportunities that students in 3i get. 3i (after Badley’s happy phrase ‘intelligence, initiative and individuality’) is a community of engaged, interested learners at Bedales. It includes academic scholars, those nominated by staff, and those who nominate themselves. 3i runs a regular bulletin, which publicises events, competitions and trips.

Valuable insights into Oxbridge

A group of 6.1 students recently attended a student conference at Hampshire Collegiate School for potential applicants to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. As well as meeting their peers from schools around Hampshire and Dorset, they gathered a wealth of tips and useful application advice from recent graduates and admissions officers. Though the bar is set very high – A*AA and even A*A*A are standard offers for many courses now – the importance of passion and interest in a subject was highlighted as by far the most important aspect of any strong application. So, lots of extra reading starts now… Differences between the application routes for Oxford and Cambridge were also discussed: Oxford look closely at GCSE results as well as the performance in their own entrance exams (necessary for most courses); Cambridge look closely at individual AS module scores. Great advice and useful information all round.

Bedales welcomes first Philosopher in Residence

Last week Bedales entertained its first ever Philosopher in Residence. Professor Keith Ward, Emeritus Regis Professor of Divinity at Oxford University spent time speaking to and discussing philosophical questions with Bedales students.

Professor Ward is best known for his work in Philosophy of Religion, but the discussions he had were by no means all about God. Students were able to discuss such diverse topics as the nature and possibility of a utopia, whether computers could think, Kant’s ethics, religious language, the existence of evil, quantum physics and the nature of reality.

A lot of the time, Professor Ward held discussions and talks in classes, but many students also took the opportunity to come to speak to him 1:1 about their work, about university or about studying philosophy. There was also sixth form conference on Wednesday afternoon, where students from both Bedales and Churcher’s College heard about Religion and Science, as well as the relation between mind and body. Professor Ward continued with the theme of science in his Philosophy Society talk on Thursday, when he spoke on the subject of “do I have to do what my genes tell me?”, a question about how much freedom we really have given our determined genetic traits.

Students have clearly been tremendously inspired by the whole thing – it is so valuable for them to see a real philosopher at work – to examine how he thinks and to interact with him. Despite being such an eminent figure Professor Ward was very open to discussing topics students were interested in, and was scholarly without being scary. We are immensely grateful for all the work that Professor Ward did with us last week, and very much hope he will be able to visit us again soon.

An evening with OB Kate Summerscale

We were very fortunate that OB Kate Summerscale – author of The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, which won the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-fiction in 2008 ­– was interviewed last Tuesday in Civics. The evening unravelled her successes, achieving a first in English at Oxford University, an MA in journalism at Stanford and becoming the Literary Editor of the Daily Telegraph. Yet, it was her role in obituaries that sparked her first book The Queen of Whale Cay. She is now working on her fourth book, which we were able to get an insight into. After talking with her over supper, it was evident that Kate is an extremely interesting and talented writer, one who should be read.

The Suspicions of Mr Whicher

OB Holly Roberts and the Spartan Mirage

Holly Roberts left Bedales four years ago and went to Oxford University to study History. She is about to finish at Oxford.  She spoke to The Green Ribbon Club (sixth form history) on the subject of the Spartan Mirage, a fascinating examination of the myths surrounding the history of Sparta. She made us aware of the problems of studying Sparta since they wrote nothing down, leaving historians reliant on much later written versions such as Herodotus and Xenophon. She illustrated the talk wonderfully including a film version of Spartan warfare and gave us fabulous stories (the little boy who stole a fox cub but too terrified to admit to it under interrogation, he held it under his tunic where it ate away his stomach and he died) as well as exposing the extraordinary ménage a trios of Spartan Warriors which involved the warrior, his older male lover and the warrior’s wife. Holly drew comparisons between the New Model Army (which AS students study) and The Spartan Army. We listened intently and her address was very well-received.

From Bedales to Oxbridge

Seven Bedales students are celebrating offers from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge on courses in the humanities and science. Five current sixth formers hope to secure the grades this summer to take up their places and two former students have received unconditional offers. Oxford bound are Sam Wilkinson (Physics) and Katie Millard (French & Linguistics). The Bedales sixth formers heading for Cambridge are Maddie Green (Medicine), Mohammad Pechuho (Classics) and Nell Whittaker (English). Former student Christy Callaway-Gale will read Spanish at Oxford after achieving three A Level A* grades last summer. Rosie Nicolson will study Architecture at Cambridge, having gained three A Level A* grades at Bedales in 2011. Three of the students, Christy, Sam and Maddie, were taught at Bedales Prep, Dunhurst, before progressing to Bedales senior school and sixth form. Read more.

Bedales A Level success 2012

 Bedales students have achieved excellent A Level results for 2012 with 39% of all grades at A* – A. They have secured places at universities including Oxford, Exeter, Edinburgh, London, Bristol, the Royal Veterinary College, the Royal Agricultural College, art colleges such as Falmouth and Leeds, and international institutions including Bocconi (Milan), New York University, Davidson (North Carolina) and University of British Columbia.
 
Nine students achieved places at Oxbridge, including Jack Briggs (from Cirencester) who, with an impressive six grades at A* or A, has secured a place at Oxford to read Medicine (A* in Mathematics and five As in Biology, Chemistry, Further Mathematics, Physics and Religious Studies). He will be joined at Oxford by Luke Austen (from Emsworth) who will also study Medicine after achieving three A* grades in Biology, French and Mathematics, and an A in Chemistry. Cicely Robinson (from Petersfield) secured her place at Oxford to study Mathematics after achieving an A* in Mathematics, and three As in Further Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. Tegen Evans (from London) achieved three A* grades in English Literature, History and Religious Studies securing her place to read English Language and Literature at Oxford. Jamie Russell (from Miland) is to read French at Oxford after achieving two A* grades in French and History, and an A in Geography.
 
Head Girl, Rebecca Wilson (from Liss) achieved three A grades in English Literature, French and Religious Studies to secure her place at Bristol to read Philosophy and French, while Deputy Head Girl, Laura Stewart (from Winchester) will read Philosophy and Theology at Edinburgh after achieving an A* grade in Religious Studies and two As in English Literature and History. During their final year at Bedales both girls jointly received the Cecily Eastwood Award for their contributions to the school. Titus Buckworth, Head Boy (from London) achieved an A* grade in Mathematics, two As in Further Mathematics and Physics and a B in Religious Studies and will read Mathematics and Philosophy at Nottingham, while Deputy Head Boy, Richard Ward, achieved two B grades in Design and English Literature, and a Cambridge Pre-U M3 in Music.
 
Oliver Bradley (from Petersfield) achieved an A* grade in Mathematics, and three As in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and will read Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College, London.
 
Twin sisters Claudia and Sophia Turner (from London) are also celebrating: Sophia achieved three A grades in English Literature, History and Spanish, and will read History at King’s College, London. Claudia achieved two As in Religious Studies and Spanish, and a B in English Literature, and will read Spanish and Philosophy at Edinburgh.
 
Darren Siah (from Weybridge, Surrey) achieved an A* in Art and two B grades in English Literature and Drama & Theatre Studies. While at Bedales, Darren was awarded the Gabriel Bruce Book Prize for his academic and creative excellence at AS and A2, as well as his contribution to successful school performances at the Edinburgh Fringe last summer and several notable internal productions. This annual prize is awarded to a member of 6.2 (Upper Sixth) who has achieved outstanding work in Theatre, Art, and in particular, general contribution to the school community.
 
An increasing number of Bedales students are choosing to study overseas. Maria Garfunkel (from Argentina) achieved three A grades in French, Italian and Spanish, and a B in Economics, and will read Economics and Finance at Bocconi University, Milan. Maddie Butcher (from Arundel) achieved three B grades in Classical Civilisation, Psychology and History and will attend the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. Cormac McShane (from London) achieved an A in Religious Studies, and two Bs in Classical Civilisation and History, and progresses to Davidson, North Carolina. All will read Liberal Arts degrees.
