‘State of the Universe’ student led lectures

Sixth form Physics ‘State of the Universe’ lectures were thoughtfully prepared and professionally delivered this year by the current 6.1 students. These included a carefully calculated account of the effects of all humans jumping at the same time at the same place on Earth; not too much as it happens according to Jim Kan and Callum Steele. They did go on to describe the catastrophic effects of collectively lasering the moon. Chris Bury gave an account of contemporary robotic capabilities and many of the moral dilemmas that these devices will inevitably present in the future. Would you be happy that your self drive car steers you into a tree rather than hit a pedestrian? The exciting prospects for nanotechnology from space elevators to buckyball medicine dispensers or ‘nanobombs’ were plain to see in Patrick Newlands and Kath Welch’s presentation. The elegance of supersymmetry was well reflected in Chloe Zhao’s amusing and well balanced talk which started with some inspiring pieces of visual art from Ryoji.

There followed a three stage launch into space through recent developments in Exoplanet discovery ably outlined by Sam MacGuffog and Izzy Soper. The challenges facing the development of space vehicles for commercial and scientific endeavours was described by Nico Bradley and Max Hannam, where different funding routes could drive the project such as Mars 1; the one way trip to colonise Mars but presented as reality show; Elon Musk’s Space X programme which suffered its first set back recently with an exploding rocket system and the need to have reusable vertical landing and recoverable rockets.    Naveed Khalessi, Bella Anderson and Will Harvey pursued the idea of the relative merits of different propulsion systems and the practicalities of terraforming  Mars or more distant planets.

Angel Fang gave a thorough account of the mechanism and uses of quantum cryptography in data security systems using the properties of quantum mechanics to elude would-be hackers. The lectures concluded with Ned Jones and Keir Dale tackling the knotty problem of superstring theory, tying the cosmological general relativity with the submicroscopic quantum world and wrapping it all in 11 dimensional space. The conclusion was that…it was hard to prove.  All together the students put in considerable individual efforts to grasp the essence of their talks, delivered them brilliantly and gained much from each other and the experience.

OB on world land speed record

Old Bedalian Angus McLeod, who is currently a first year Engineering student at Swansea University, came to deliver a lecture on the Bloodhound SSC project to a group of Block 5 and 6.1 physicists last Friday. His presentation covered the latest developments in the UK’s 1000mph world land speed record attempt next year in South Africa. The driver/pilot Andy Green is already the world record holder and the target set is significant step up designed to drive technological innovation forwards. Angus’s talk was stimulating and motivating and a clear reminder of the world leading engineering capabilities of this country.

Best ever A* GCSE performance at Bedales

Bedales celebrated impressive exam results on GCSE results day with over half the grades awarded at A* or A. Unlike any other school, Bedales students tailor their studies by choosing a combination of GCSEs, the more challenging IGCSEs, and the school’s unique GCSE alternative, Bedales Assessed Courses (BACs). All three qualifications use the same A*-G grading system. This year’s cohort achieved 29% A* grades, higher than any of their predecessors since the current curriculum was started in 2008.

The content of BACs is broad and stimulating offering cross curricular opportunities that are suited to a wide variety of learning styles. Internal assessment includes a mixture of written assignments, presentations, projects and performances, together with terminal examinations as appropriate. Bedales is the first school to be recognised by UCAS as offering its own GCSE-replacement qualification.

12 Bedales students achieved a minimum of nine A* grades; three of those achieving 11A*s and three achieving 10A*s.  In total 21 students (from a cohort of 92) achieved a minimum of nine grade A*/As.

Lili Bidwell from West Meon, Poppy Duncan from Stroud and Juliette Perry from Petersfield all achieved 11A*s. Chloe Green from Liss, Robert Miller from London and Phoebe Noble from Chichester all received 10A*s. Lili obtained A*s in Bedales Assessed Courses Classical Music, English Literature and Philosophy, Religion & Ethics, IGCSEs in Mathematics and Triple Award Science, and GCSEs in English, French, History and Spanish.  Poppy achieved her A*s Bedales Assessed Courses in Classical Music, English Literature and Geography, IGCSEs Mathematics and Triple Award Science, and GCSEs in English, French, Latin and Spanish. Juliette received A*s Bedales Assessed Courses in Design, English Literature, Geography and Philosophy, Religion & Ethics, IGCSEs in Mathematics and Triple Award Science, and GCSEs in English, French and History.

Twins Emily and Natasha Blackley from Priors Dean achieved a total of 18A*s and 4As between them; nine A*s and 2As each. They both achieved A*s in their Bedales Assessed Course in Geography, IGCSEs in Mathematics and Triple Award Science, and GCSE French, as well as an A in GCSE English. Emily also received A*s in her Bedales Assessed Courses in Ancient Civilisations and Dance, and GCSE Spanish, and an A in GCSE History, while Natasha obtained A*s in her Art, Design and English Literature Bedales Assessed Courses and an A in GCSE Latin.

Commenting on the students’ achievements, Keith Budge, Headmaster, Bedales Schools said:

The Bedales curriculum is now mainly a combination of the more challenging IGCSEs and Bedales Assessed Courses, with fewer GCSEs, which makes the results even more impressive. Bedales Assessed Courses are externally moderated and recognised by UCAS. Bedales’ unique curriculum is built around a group of five compulsory subjects: IGCSEs in English, Mathematics, Science (Double or Triple Award) and a Modern Foreign Language (the 2013 cohort was the last to take GCSEs in English Language and a Modern Foreign Language). This ensures both that the full range of core skills is covered and also that the minimum requirement for much of higher education is met. Students then choose from other options, which include up to five BACs from a total of 11 courses on offer that include subjects such as Ancient Civilisations, History and Classical Music, an additional IGCSE Modern Foreign Language or GCSEs (e.g. Latin or Computing).

The overall combined GCSE/IGCSE /BAC pass marks in 2013 were:

  • A* – A: 54%
  • A* – C: 93%

Bedales A Level Success

Bedales students have achieved strong A Level results for 2013 with 40% of all grades at A*-A. They have secured places at universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Exeter, Bristol, St Andrews, York, Warwick, Leicester, Leeds, Manchester, Kings College London, University College London, Imperial College London, Plymouth, Aberdeen, Swansea, Sheffield, Nottingham and Brunel, art colleges such as Falmouth University, Arts University Bournemouth, City College Brighton, University of the Arts London and UCA Farnham, as well as international institutions including New York University.

Six Bedales students have secured places at Oxford and Cambridge; four have done so through this summer’s grades and two former students received unconditional offers.

Sam Wilkinson from Midhurst, who will read Physics at Oriel College, Oxford, received his results today having spent the summer working as a Data Scientist for NASA in collaboration with their team which is based at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas. Sam achieved four A*s in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Further Mathematics, and an A grade in Biology.

Katie Millard from Hambledon will read French and Linguistics at Keble College, Oxford after achieving 4 A*s in Chemistry, Latin, English Literature and French. Maddy Green from Liss will read Medicine at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge after achieving three A*s in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics, and an A in Further Mathematics. Nell Whittaker from Shrewsbury will study English at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge after achieving an A* grade in English Literature and two A grades in Latin and History. Former student Christy Callaway-Gale from Petersfield will read Spanish and Linguistics at Oriel College, Oxford after achieving three A Level A* grades last summer. Rosie Nicolson from Cranbrook, Kent will study Architecture at Cambridge, having gained three A Level A* grades at Bedales in 2011. Three of the students, Christy, Sam and Maddy, were taught at Bedales Prep, Dunhurst, before progressing to Bedales senior school and sixth form.

Two students; Georgina Gulliver from Buriton and Deputy Head Girl, Katie Shannon, from Steep will both go on to read Architecture at the University of Manchester and the University of Edinburgh respectively. Georgina achieved two As in Art and Mathematics and a D3 in Music Pre-U. Katie achieved three As in Art, Design and Mathematics, and a B in Physics.

Tim Jones from Dorking will read Mathematics at Imperial College London after achieving three A*s in Chemistry, Mathematics, and Further Mathematics, and an A grade in Physics. Joe Pemberton from Chichester will also read Mathematics, but at the University of Warwick, after achieving two A*s in Mathematics and Further Mathematics, an A in Latin and a D3 in Music Pre-U. Lucy Waterhouse from Midhurst achieved two A*s in Drama & Theatre Studies and History, and an A grade in English Literature and will read History of Art at the University of Bristol. Evie Cullingworth from Downley, Buckinghamshire achieved two As in English Literature and Drama & Theatre Studies, a D3 in Music Pre-U and will study Drama at New York University.

Felix Conran from London is delighted to have secured a place at the University of the Arts in London to study Product Design and Arran Stamper from Preston, Lancashire will read Illustration at the University of Edinburgh (after achieving two A*s in Art and Russian, and an A grade in Design). This is a particular achievement for both these students as it is rare for Art and Design students to be offered places on such prestigious arts degree courses without having first completed a Foundation Diploma year. This was because their work was of such a high calibre.

Although both receiving university places, Archie Howes from Ropley and George Veys from Guildford have decided to set up their own business, Darkroom Productions, an event management company providing the sound and lighting for festivals, concerts and corporate events.

Commenting on the results, Keith Budge, Headmaster of Bedales Schools, said:

6.2 physicists visit CERN

Facing sub zero temperatures in Geneva, 6.2 physicists visited the foremost centre for Particle Physics research: CERN. Nine students and two staff had an extensive tour visiting the main control centre, CMS and ATLAS detectors and saw active collisions between Lead ions and protons as the 27km particle accelerator was in operation. We were ably guided by post doctoral research students through the astonishing engineering and technological feats of constructing and operating the accelerator and the enormous detectors. We went down 100m below ground to the service tunnel at the CMS detector but had to remain behind the several metres of radiation protection. The enthusiasm and excitement of working in such a cutting edge community was evident, particularly in light of the recent ‘discovery’ of the Higgs Boson. The ring produces about 600 million collisions per second and only the most interesting or unusual results are stored but still this is generating a lot of data about 25PB (25million GB) every year – the same as 1,000 years’ worth of DVD quality video – this will then be analysed and interrogated by scientists across the world through the GRID network looking for clues to the structure and make-up of the universe. The LHC is about to undergo a rebuild of its superconducting magnets to make it faster and more powerful and break into unknown territories; apparently the scientist have enough data to be going on with in the meantime.

Physicists explore Rutherford Appleton Laboratory

On 16 January, Block 4 and 5 physicists visited the Appleton Rutherford Laboratory. The day really gave an insight in to life at the lab, and for those of us considering science as a career it was very enlightening. We looked at the huge neutron microscope, the cryogenics labs, the space centre and the computer data rooms. It was a freezing cold morning but everyone was buzzing with excitement. This lab is one of the top science labs in the UK and we were allowed to spend the day exploring it.

In the visitors’ centre we enjoyed using plasma balls, model hydrogen cars, lasers and microscopes. Then we were split into groups to look around the site with a tour guide. We were taken to the ISIS neutron microscope, where they look at the structure of objects, from ancient artifacts to the minute structure of crystals.

We were also treated to a talk on the electromagnetic spectrum run by charity Science Oxford. The talk was really interesting, focusing on how visible light can help us tell what elements make up stars (by the colors of the rays they give off), and how sun cream works. We used a thermal imaging camera which used infrared to find out our body temperatures. There are some igneous applications of infrared, such as seeing stars and planets that are in a dust cloud and so cannot be seen by visible light.

We also looked at the Space Centre (ISIC), which can control two satellites and is one of the main space centres in the UK; the 3D projector, where an image of a satellite can be created and people can walk through it and look at it; and their spark room, where ideas for new space-based companies are produced. This room also had a state of the art touch screen table which was awesome.

After lunch my group visited the cryogenics laboratory, where we explored all the uses of super cool material, such as really steady space images and super conductors.  Other groups looked at the banks of computers in the storage rooms. The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is the main centre in the UK which receives information from the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland. This takes a huge amount of memory (along with the information produced by the labs themselves) and so the computer centre is huge.

After we had finished the tours for the day there was a fantastic display using liquid nitrogen where batteries, phones, flowers and balloons were all frozen. However, at minus 196 degrees Celsius it would not be something I would want to do at home!

Overall the day was awesome. Thanks to Tobias we were given a real treat of being allowed to look around one of the top labs in the UK and it made things we had learnt in lessons seem more relevant to the real technological advances in the real world!
